Abbey of St. Peter, Salzburg.

Picture obtained from www.stift-stpeter.at The Abbey of St.Peter was founded by St. Rupert, bishop of Worms, in 696. Rupert, a possible descended from the Merovingians, was asked by Childeric III to evangelize Bavaria, and travelled to the Danube, where he converted Duke Theodo II. The duke gave him land at Iuvavum (an old roman settlement), on which Rupert established the abbey and the Nonnberg convent. Rupert also helped establishing the salt-mining industry from which the city takes its present name, Salzburg. He died c. 718, and was buried in the abbey, though Virgil later (c.774) transferred his relics to the cathedral in Salzburg.

Another early abbot was St.Virgil (Vergilius, patron saint of the children). An irishman, who was made abbotbishop around 755, and was perhaps best known for his dispute with St.Boniface. He laboured successfully for the spreading of the Faith in neighbouring heathen countries, especially Carinthia (Kärnten). He died in Salzburg in 784 and was canonized by Gregory IX in 1233.

Under abbotbishop Arno, a friend of Karl the Great, the seat was elevated to archbishopric. In 1127, the church and surrounding buildings burned down to the ground. In the years 1130-43 Abbot Balderic built a new three ship roman basilika. The church and monastery were reconstructed several times in the following years. The 'St.-Veits-Kapelle' was built in 1319 and is one of Salzburgs oldest gothic buildings.

The buildingcomplex was rebuilt in Rokokostyle in the 18th century by abbot Beda Seeauer.

St. Peter and St. Erentrud is the oldest continuing monastery and convent in the German-speaking world. The monks and the nuns belong to the Benedictine order.
