This list of works is based on Charles H. Sherman & T. Donley Thomas :
Johann Michael Haydn - A Chronological Thematic Catalogue of His Works. Since I do not wish to use their work to much, I have
only extracted the date and place of composition. Their catalogue also comprises information about scoring, catalogs, copies,
autographs and editions, plus the first few bars of the works.
Michael Haydn never compiled a thematic catalog of his works. And he never supervised the making
of one. The earliest catalog was compiled in 1808 by Nikolaus Lang for 'Biographische Skizze'. In 1907 Lothar Perger compiled
a catalogue over Michael's orchestral works for 'Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich', which is much more reliable. And in 1915
Anton Maria Klafsky undertook a similar work regarding the sacred vocal music.
Not very much of Michael Haydn's music was published in his lifetime, and only a part of this with his
knowledge. A welldocumented story about this, tells us how Nannerl Mozart acted as an agent for Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig and
secured copies of his works behind his back for publishing without paying him fees. In very much the same way as the same company
had cheated Constance Mozart around ten years earlier.5
He wrote a large amount of works. He is perhaps best known for his church music, but he wrote music
in almost all known genres. More than 40 symphonies, a dozen concertos for various instruments, chamber music, songs, dances and
divertimentos. For the stage he wrote an opera and a handfull of 'Singspiels'.
