LUIGI CHERUBINI (1760 - 1842)


 
   

 

   

  Maria Luigi Carlo Zenobio Salvatore Cherubini was born in Florence, September 14th 1760. His instruction in music began at the age of six with his father, himself a musician. At the age of thirteen he had composed several religious works. He began a period of study with Sarti in Bologna and Milan from 1778 to 1780.

In 1786, Cherubini settled in Paris. He was appointed inspector at the new Institut National de Musique (from 1795 the Conservatoire), following the succesful staging of his French Operas. His status soon being enhanced by the succes of Médée in 1797.

After a period of depression just after the turn of the century, he was back in business by 1809. Not as an operacomposer, but as a composer of religious music. He got the position of 'Surintendant de la musique du Roi'. In 1816 he wrote a Requiem commemorating the anniversary of the execution of Louis XVI. A huge succes, which made a deep impression on later masters such as Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms.

Cherubini who was undoubtedly the most influential figure in French music in his time, died in Paris, March 15th. 1842.
