JOHANN BAPTIST CRAMER (1771 - 1858)

Johann Baptist Cramer was born in Mannheim, February 24th 1771. His father Wilhelm was a famous
violinist. In the early 1770s the family moved to London. Johann began studying the piano at the age of seven, making his first
public appearance in 1781. From 1783, he studied for a while with Clementi.
In 1788 Cramer began a three year long European tour. Back in London in 1791, he established himself
as Englands premier pianist. He played as soloist in the Professional Concerts and the Salomon Concerts.
Another tour in 1799-1800 took him to Germany and Austria, where he met Beethoven with whom he formed
a lasting friendship.
Back in London, Cramer entered the music publishing business with various partners. The company,
J.B.Cramer & Co. thrived from the beginning and is still in existence. Cramer was a co-founder of the Philharmonic Society in
1813 and a member of the board of the Royal Academy of Music from 1822.
Johann Baptist Cramer died in Kensington in 1858.
