Joseph Leopold, Edler von Eybler was born in Schwechat near Vienna on February 8th 1765. He was a pupil
of Albrechtsberger and a protégé of Josef Haydn. He became a close friend to Mozart, helping him with rehearsals and caring for him
during his final illness. Mozarts wife Constanze asked him to complete his requiem, but having worked on the Dies Irae, he felt
unable to finish the task.
He was director of the choir at the Carmelite Church and the Viennese Schottenkloster. He held the last
post for a number of years, until he succeeded Salieri as Court Kapellmeister in 1824. In 1833 he suffered a stroke while conducting
Mozarts Requiem and could no longer fulfill his duties at court. Eybler died on July 24th. 1846.
Eyblers output includes a Requiem, two oratorios and other religious works, as well as symphonies,
concertos, chamber music and songs. He was well esteemed in his time, though very little is recorded today.
