ANTONIO ROSETTI (1750 - 1792)

Rosetti was born Frantisek Antonín Rosety or germanised Franz Anton Rösler in Litomerice, Northern Bohemia around 1750. Destined for a religious education, he received his early musical training with the Jesuits.

In 1773 Rosetti left his native Bohemia and joined the Hofkapelle of Kraft Ernst, Prince von Öttingen-Wallerstein in Southern Germany. It was also around this time he adopted the italian version of his name. He served the prince for sixteen years.

On January 28th 1777 Rosetti married Rosina Neher, with whom he had three daughters.

He spent a period in Paris from late 1781. Here he experienced the orchestra of the 'Concerts Spirituelle'. His symphony 'La Chasse' was probably written for this orchestra. While in Paris he meets Gluck and Piccinni. In 1783/84 he travels throughout Germany.

In 1785 Rosetti took over the leadership of the orchestra from Joseph Reicha and around 1789 he left for Northern Germany to serve as Kapelmeister to the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in Ludwigslust. In his service, Rosetti died on June 30th 1792.

During his altogether twenty years of service, Rosetti composed a steady stream of symphonies, concertos, chamber music and vocal pieces.
