Johann Schobert was probably born in 1735 in Schlesien, Austria. Very
little is known about his early years. Around 1760 he moved to Paris, where he settled down as a
keyboard virtuoso and composer, mainly for the keyboard. Here he served the Prince of Conti.
He came into contact with the Mozart family when they visited Paris in
1764. Leopold Mozart reported that his children played Schoberts works with ease, and that it made
Schobert furious. Leopold called him 'Low and not at all what he should be'. The young Mozart based
the second movement of his second piano concerto (K.39) on Schoberts sonata op. 17 no. 2. Mozarts
early works were generally influenced by the style and technique of Schobert, Eckhard and their
popular contemporaries.
Schobert died in Paris on August 28th, 1767.
He wrote some 30 harpsichord sonatas, mostly accompanied by one or more
instruments. His worklist also included harpsichord concertos and symphonies.
